The Calgary Zoo was established in 1929, once the Calgary Zoological Society was formed. The Zoo is located in the heart of Calgary, along the Bow River. The thirty-six mammals and seventy-eight birds at the start, were later joined by coyotes, bears, timber wolves, lynx and a polar bear. The Zoo made headlines in 1939, when "Buster" the sea lion got out of his habitat and swam in the Bow River. Throughout the years, the Zoo expanded with additional habitats, buildings, animals and an animal hospital.
