Calgary has much to see and offer
Calgary is known as "The Heart of the New West." A fitting name for a city so rich in culture and history, but one, also, with an eclectic mix of things to do and see.
Many visitors enjoy hitting the slopes at Sunshine Village Ski & Snowboard Resort, also just outside of Banff.
Once the lakes have frozen over, ice fishing becomes a major draw for the Calgary area, especially near Canmore. Be sure to keep your tackle box fully stocked and head for Lake Minnewanka, a short drive north of Canmore and Banff.
A popular source of entertainment for locals and visitors is a visit to the Scotiabank Saddledome, home ice for the Calgary Flames of the NHL. Hockey fans in the Calgary area – from Red Deer to Three Hills – fill the Scotiabank Saddledome during the NHL season, running from October through May.
Once the snow and ice have melted away and the rebirth of spring is underway, make your way to any one of the many golf courses in the area. From the McKenzie Meadows Golf Club, just south of downtown Calgary, to the Sirocco Golf Club, the weather and conditions should mean excellent rounds for you and your golfing buddies – and well worth the drive in from nearby cities like Airdrie and Olds.
July visitors will certainly want to experience the Calgary Stampede. A 10-day annual event, the Calgary Stampede is a mix of rodeos, exhibitions, and festival celebrations – make the drive in from Strathmore and check out one of Calgary's most popular festivals.
In September, plan on experiencing the Calgary International Film Festival. You'll have a choice of nearly 200 multi-genre films at either the Globe Theatre or the Cineplex Eau Claire. Drive in from Innisfail or Sundre and rub elbows with top filmmakers and fellow cinema fanatics.
A unique and exciting experience during any season, TELUS Spark is an ideal way to spend an afternoon with the kids. Allow them to experience the latest in science and innovation at TELUS. Another of the iconic attractions in the area is the Calgary Tower, a stunning 191-meter high observation tower. Make a visit and check out the sterling 360-degree views of Calgary.
As you'll discover on your visit into Calgary, there's a wealth of exciting and attractive places to visit, things to see and do, and unique experiences sure to create long lasting memories.
