Visiting Southern Alberta
Southern Alberta is a gorgeous landscape of charming towns and cities, picturesque natural areas, and must-visit attractions. Of the many premier destinations in southern AB, Calgary ranks among the most exceptional, and this winter and into spring, it’ll yield unmatched adventures for the whole family.
Medicine Hat is one of Alberta’s southeastern-most cities and yields full days of adventure, exploration, and more thanks to an impressive batch of attractions. The Medicine Hat Mall will offer up unique wares and excellent deals, while Echo Dale Regional Park will be alive with spring colors in early 2017. Downtown Medicine Hat features an array of nightlife options, fine dining, and so much more.
The Canalta Centre will be abuzz during your visit to Medicine Hat, thanks in large part to the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League. The 2016-17 season for the Tigers will already be underway by the time you visit, and there’ll be a host of sterling matchups.
On February 20th you can watch the Tigers take on the Portland Winterhawks, and the final home game of the season will be on March 19th against the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
One of the most popular draws in southern Alberta is on fire – the Calgary Flames will be shredding the ice at the Scotiabank Saddledome this winter and spring. Drive in from nearby Strathmore or Canmore and check out the Flames in action.
The Flames will face the Edmonton Oilers (a huge local matchup) on January 21st, and the Philadelphia Flyers on February 15th. The Flames will host their final home game of the season on April 2nd against the Anaheim Ducks.
If your visit to southern Alberta is slated for late 2016, be sure to enjoy a festive and jolly celebration in Rocky Mountain House. Visit the Lou Soppit Community Centre on December 14th and 15th for the event: a Christmas Festival of Music: A Ray of Hope. Each day performances will start at 7 p.m. Rocky Mountain House is northwest of downtown Calgary, and a short drive directly west from both Red Deer and Sylvan Lake.
