Warm-Weather Fun in Southern Alberta | Summer 2014

The urban and cultural hub of southern Alberta, Calgary is the place to be for all the biggest concerts year-round, and music lovers gravitate toward the Scotiabank Saddledome this August. Rod Stewart and Santana bring decades of hits to the arena on August 4th, before Bruno Mars comes the very next night, bringing his trademark soaring croon and numerous hits of his own. Then, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers fill the Saddledome with their classic sound on August 19th and Katy Perry rounds out the month, bringing sweet-as-candy pop and thousands of adoring tweens, on August 29th.

Alternative music fans head to Calgary as they gear up for X-Fest 2014. Fort Calgary hosts two days of music, food, and fun on August 30th and 31st, with headliners Jack White, Arctic Monkeys, Death Cab for Cutie, and Foster the People.

Take advantage of the warm summer weather while it lasts by heading westward and experiencing the Great Outdoors. Just over an hour outside of Calgary, the neighboring communities of Canmore and Banff offer quick and convenient access to Banff National Park and Spray Valley Provincial Park. This is the season to enjoy Alberta’s most popular destination, where you can hike through dense coniferous forest, get up close to a range of wildlife, and spend some time on the beautiful Lake Louise.

To the northeast, Red Deer offers a variety of summertime outdoor fun you won’t have to leave town to enjoy. At Bower Ponds, paddleboats and canoes are available for rent. Numerous walking trails surround the water, as do expansive grass fields, perfect for a game of soccer, an idyllic picnic, or just an afternoon gazing at the clouds. Red Deer’s Kerry Wood Nature Centre is another option for a relaxing day outdoors, where lucky visitors spot wildlife like deer, moose, fox, and a range of waterfowl.

Excitement is mounting throughout Medicine Hat and southeast Alberta, as the 2014 Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede approaches. Held July 23rd through 26th, events include horse competitions and sales, the Summer Stampede Trade Show featuring over 100 exhibitors, and three days of rodeo action. Stick around after the action each night for the 2014 Grandstand Night Shows, with musical performances by big-name headliners like Josh Turner, Everclear, Eve6, and more.

Families visiting Lethbridge this summer won’t want to miss the 2014 Lethbridge Whoop-Up Days, August 19th through 23rd. The festival is chock full of fun for the whole family – lumberjack shows, a farmers’ market, bungee jumping, live concerts, fireworks, and an array of kids' fun. Let the little guys and girls engage in Pedal Tractor Pulls, the Freddy Fusion Science Magic Show, and roaming performances by Rainbow the Clown. Then stand back and look up to be wowed by the high-flying acrobatics of the Sway Pole Daredevils.

The former Full House shocks audiences with work that is decidedly "blue" at the Deerfoot Casino in Calgary. The laughs begin at 9 p.m.
