Visiting Calgary and Southern Alberta

Spring invades Southern Alberta and events and festivals ramp up for the spring and early summer season. Spring stART at Banff National Park marks the season in April with a diversity of visual and performing arts. Strathmore wraps up the hockey season the end of April hosting the ATP Alberta Cup Tournament at the Strathmore Family Arena, while Airdrie, 10 minutes north of Calgary, prepares for spring cleaning and summer projects at the Airdrie Home & Lifestyle Show. Medicine Hat Speedway hosts the Season Opener for stock car racing in late May while Red Deer’s Central Alberta Children’s Festival, now in its 7th year, follows the Calgary International Children’s Festival.

The Bentley Generals hosts the 2013 Allan Cup, April 15th through the 20th in Red Deer. The ATB Financial Allan Cup Senior Men’s National Championship is held at the Red Deer Arena on 43rd Street in Red Deer. Along with the excitement of hockey, nightly entertainment includes the Tera Lee Band and Jordan Doell among the lineup.

The 2013 Calgary International Children’s Festival kicks off summer fun for the family at the Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts and Olympic Plaza. The Calgary Children’s Festival runs May 22nd through 25th, featuring performing arts geared especially for young audiences and participants.

Athletes, be sure to launch your summer running challenges at the 2013 Scotia Bank Calgary Marathon. The 49th running of the Calgary Marathon is May 26th. Considered one of Alberta’s best road races, events also feature a half-marathon, 10km, 5km walk or run, and a kid’s marathon. Race package pickup, starting line and finish for the Calgary Marathon is at Stampede Park. In conjunction with the run, Calgary playwright Melanie Jones production of Endure: A Run Woman Show will be shown at the Big Four Building May 23rd through 25th.

June brings the 2013 Banff National Park Bike Fest to the Canadian Rockies west of Calgary. Banff is home base for events running June 13th thorough 16th. Bike Fest features five races that take place in Banff National Park. Cheer on your favorite cyclists in Friday’s Lake Louise Road Race at Castle Mountain Junction. Saturday and Sunday events are best viewed in the Town of Banff.
