Throughout Alberta, sports are played and enjoyed at a number of levels. From minor league hockey – including the Western Hockey League and Alberta Junior Hockey League – to a wealth of popular curling clubs and outdoor sports teams, Alberta features a strong presence of localized sports from Red Deer and Grand Prairie, to Airdrie and Bonnyville.
In Edmonton, hockey fans cheer on the Sherwood Park Crusaders of the AJHL. Fans head out in droves from nearby cities like Leduc and Stony Plain to watch the Edmonton Oil Kings face their WHL opponents.
Curling enthusiasts in the Edmonton area enjoy the Crestwood Curling Club and the Derrick Curling Club – easily accessed from St. Albert or Sherwood Park. South of Edmonton in Red Deer, fans flock to the ENMAX Centrium for all the action of the Red Deer Rebels – a force within the Western Hockey League.
Calgary features its own blend of local leagues and clubs. Hockey and curling are ever popular with Calgarians and nearby sports fans in Strathmore and Canmore. The Calgary Canucks and Calgary Mustangs compete in the AJHL, and present an action-packed rivalry. Cowtown also hosts the Calgary Curling Club. Established in 1888, the CCC was awarded the Small Size Club of the Year by the Canadian Society of Club Managers.
